Tatul is one of the least-famous corners of the Rhodopes. The most original Thracian tomb from the middle of the 1st millenium B.C. is situated here. It is a pyramid, carved into the rock, with a height of over 5 m., and a tomb mausoleum on the top. Numerous stone steps were carved on its slopes, as well as urns and gutters with ritual purposes. According to the archaeological researches this place used to be a Thracian sanctuary. The foundations of a medieval fortress can be seen around the tomb.
