The Ascension of God Monastery of Sopot is situated in the northern slopes of Stara Planina, below the magnificent gorge of the Monastery River. We do not know the date of its foundation, but after its burning down in 1877, it was restored in 1879. Vasil Levski, the Apostle of the Bugarian Liberty, was prepared to become a monk here in 1858.
