Smolian is the 'capital' of the Rhodopes, because the folklore and the lifestyle of the Rhodopean people are best preserved here. Beside the archaic houses in the districts Raikovo and Ustovo, the new buildings in the town center were also built in the style that is typical for the region. Smolian's proximity to Pamporovo, as well as the beautiful forests around the town, makes it the favourite mountain town in Bulgaria for all tourists.
