The Preobrazenski (Transfiguration) Monastery is located on the left slope of the beautiful defile of the Yantra River. Founded in the 14th century, it was repeatedly robbed and destroyed. It was last restored in 1882 by Master Dimitar, who was hanged during the restoration process, so his work was finished by Kolio Ficheto. Most of the unique icons of the monastery were painted by Zachari Zograf. The monastery played a significant part in the preserving of the Bulgarian culture during the Middle Ages. Some precious books and icons, arranged into a museum collection, are still preserved in the monastery. The bell-tower was also made by the hands of Kolio Ficheto, and it has a 750-kilograms bell, given by the Russian Emperor Alexander the Second as a sign of gratitude to the Bulgarian people. Unfortunately, the front part of the monastery collapsed in 1977. From the yard you can get wonderful views of the opposite slope, where another Christian symbol is situated - The Saint Trinity Monastery.
