Kartaklaia - the eagles' sanctuary

, the ancient Thracian sanctuary, used during the 1st millenium B.C., is situated a kilometer away from the town of Ardino. It is a tall rock monolyth, with over a hundred trapezoidal niches engraved on it. The niches were used for keeping the ashes of the dead. This sanctuary type is only characteristic for the Eastern Rhodopes.
