The Merdan Monastery is among the oldest ones in Stara Planina - founded during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. It was built on the spot where the Tarnovo Patriarch Joanikii Second welcomed Tsar Ivan-Asen Second after his victory against the Byzantines at Klokotnitsa.
