The Mantaritsa Biospheric Reserve has kept the most majestic coniferous forests in Bulgaria. They resemble a jungle, and most of them are impassable. Spruces are the most common trees here, followed by fir-trees and white pines. Their age is 130-150 years on the average. The fauna is extremely various. There are many wood-grouses, bears, red deer, boars, does and wolves. The remains of an ancient Thracian fortress have been discovered on the Pashino Burdo Peak in the western part of the reserve. The foundations of the fortress are over a meter wide, and now their height is 150 cm. The fortress encircles an interesting rock with a height of 5 meters, on top of which 4 platforms have been discovered, but their purpose is still unknown. The peak offers a beautiful view of Rila and part of the Rhodopi Mountains.
The highest peak of the Batak Mountain, Syutkya, rises above Mantaritsa.
