Lyutitsa is the biggest preserved fortress, situated in the farthest eastern part of the Rhodopes amidst infinite oak forests, perching on the highest peak. Its walls, at places 9 m tall, surround an area of 15 decares. There are numerous defensive towers on the wall, with various shapes – circular, rectangular, trapezoidal. The foundations of the church can still be seen in the center of the fortress, as well as a water storage basin, carved into the hard rock, with a diameter of 4 m. Far back in the 8th – 9th centuries, Lyutitsa used to be a religious center of the Eastern Rhodopes, and in the 14th century it became a center of the Bishopric. All around the fortress there are amazing scenic views of the whole eastern part of the Rhodopes.
