The Kormisosh Region is the most unusual place in the Rhodopes. Where shall we begin? From its exceptional fauna, its ravishing forests and unreachable gullies, the abandoned villages, perching on the rocks, or the numerous peaks, offering unforgetable sights? Here are the largest populations of brown bear, wolf, red deer and wild goat in the Bulgarian mountains. The muflone, the wild-boar and the deer are common here, and sometimes you could see a stag. The brown bear population is especially lively. It can be found everywhere, but most often in autumn, in the Buchva (Barrel) Area, because of the oak forests, whose acorns are the main food before winter sleep.
The mating season of the red deer is from the end of August to the beginning of October. Over 40 male deer and much more does gather in the Garvan Dol (Crow Gully) Area at that time. Even at daytime you can hear the fearful roar of the mating deer. There are about ten more gathering places in the area, with 5-10 stags each.
More than 100 wild goats live around the Akva Peak. They can be easily observed, because the slopes are rocky and bald. The goats' favourite places are the unreachable pinnacles of the Cherven Kamak (Red Stone) and Diurentsite.
In the last few years the wolves' number increased sharply. Our observations conclude that the region is inhabited by at least three dominating families and numerous single animals. We can judge about their presence by their excrements, left on the paths of the ridges. The wolves do a lot of damage to the game, and this shows in the bones of eaten animals, studding some areas like battlefields.
There is a bear-breeding farm with about 15 animals in Kormisosh. They live among hedges and can be seen at any time of year.
