The Kilifare Monastery Birth of Virgin Mary is located in a beautiful forest on the banks of the Belitsa River. It was founded by Teodosii Turnovski in 1350. It was destroyed by the Turks many times, and restored afterwards. Its present church was built by Kolio Ficheto in 1842. This church keeps precious archaic icons and an iconostasis , made by icon-painters from Trevnia. The residential buildings were built in 1849. There used to be a literature school here in the Middle Ages.
