The St Nikola Kapinovo Monastery
The famous St Nikola Kapinovo Monastery rises among the northern slopes of Stara Planina. It was founded in 1272, at the time when Tsar Konstantin Asen ruled. It was burned by the kurdjali in the 17th century, then again in 1800, but it was restored by the archimandrite Naftalim in 1835. The monastery bedazzles you at first with its tall, fortress-like walls, upon which its daily rooms bend. The feeling lasts when you step inside the lovely patio, surrounded by wooden verandahs, decorated with rich vines. The main pride of the monastery is the church. It keeps one of the oldest icons in Bulgaria – the icon of the Holy Mother and the Infant, as well as some other unique icons, painted by pope Vitan in 1814. The Kapinovo Monastery was a center of the liberation struggle, and it was used as a hospital during the Russian-Turkish War.
