Gluhute Kamani (The Deaf Stones)
This is a religious rock complex, made by the Thracians a few milleniums ago. It is situated several kilometers away from the village of Malko Gradishte, in the north-east of the Rhodopes. Hundreds of trapezoidal niches are engraved into a monolythic stone block, rising up from the ground like a gigantic tooth with a height of 30 meters. The purpose of these openings is not completely clear, but they are assumed to have been used as funeral urns. Fifty meters away from the niches are the megalythic tombs, two of which are perfectly preserved. The first one is a room with a length of 2 m. and a width of 1.5 m., carved into the granite rock. Climbing the 33 engraved steps, you can go up to the very peak, where the much larger tomb mausoleum is situated. A noble Thracian chief was buried there. The whole funeral complex was once surrounded by a big fortress wall, and its foundations can still be seen. The Deaf Stones megalythic complex was one of the greatest Thracian sanctuaries B.C., and its power can still be felt by anyone who visits it. The sensation becomes even stronger because of the incredible scenic view from the peak, where the Ivailovgrad Dam is plain to see.
