SAKAR – dolmens
Milleniums before the new era, unique magalythic culture developed in the Sakar Mountain, and its monuments are perfectly preserved till nowadays. These are hundreds of tombs – dolmens, built from several stone blocks with a weight of thousands of kilograms. Every wall consists of a separate stone block, and there is a carved entrance on one of them. The largest rectangular stone is placed upon the walls, and at some dolmens it reaches a length of 300 cm, a width of 180 cm, and thickness of 60 cm. The room inside the tomb is over 200 cm tall. All the blocks are rectangular and fit next to each other with exceptionally precise proportions. The symmetry of construction is especially well expressed in the dolmens including two or three funeral chambers – their internal walls are flat, straight and precisely shaped. More than 600 dolmens have been discovered in Sakar, Strandza and the Eastern Rhodopes, and yet, they still remain some of the most mysterious monuments of the Thracian culture.
