The Carichina Biospheric Reserve has kept the most beautiful forests in Bulgaria. Its lower part is covered with 160 – 220-year-old beech forests. As the altitude increases, the forests turn into spruce ones, and in the highest parts the forests are of white fir. White fir is an extremely rare species, and here is the farthest northern find of it in the country.
The fauna is exceptionally rich: the brown bears are numerous. There are also deer, does, pigs, wolves and many bird species. The relief of Carichina is quite rough, with steep slopes and deep gullies with big brooks. There are several picturesque peaks and ridges in the reserve area, fill of meadows with lovely views. Some of the major peaks are: Ushite (The Ears), that provides view of the Boatin Reserve as well, Vezen, Yumruka (The Fist), and the shorter one Kukui which offers an incredible panorama.
