Tsarevets - the heart of Bulgaria
click
Tsarevets is the most majestic Medieval fortress on Bulgarian territory. It was built upon the foundations of a Byzantine fortification in the 12th century. There used to be three entrances. The thick walls surrounding the hill, along with the vertical rocky slopes around, made Tsarevets unconquerable.
Over 400 houses, more than 20 churches and 4 monasteries have been found in the yard of the fortress. Much of the remains have been preserved perfectly - the way to the main entrance with its huge gate, the imposing walls and battle towers, among which the Balduin Tower, named after the commander who was captured and locked inside of it. The Patriarchal Church, restored in 1981, is at the very top of Tsarevets. Apart from its huge size and its architectural qualities, this church will impress you with its iconography, telling the story of the rise and fall of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. The king's palace, which is partially preserved, is below the church.
