Borovitsa
There are dozens of small villages in the catching area of the Borovitsa River, built upon unreachable ridges and slopes. The folklore, the architecture, and even the features of the local people are unique and can only be seen in this region. The first thing that gets your attention, is the houses, resembling fortresses, built entirely with stones. Despite their tough appearance, they still keep the spirit of the people who lived in them. These people were Bulgarian Christians until the opening of the 18th century, but after long years of severe protective struggle against the Turkish conquerors, the local villages were finally subdued by a big janissary squad, deserted from the Turkish army. The locals were forced to accept not only the Islam, but also the Turkish language. This way the local population was quickly assimilated. This region has always been inhabited by proud and tough people; the mountain itself is tough around here – steep, difficult to pass, cut by deep gullies, forming canyons and meanders. The highest peak in the area is Chiliaka. It offers a scenic view to a great part of the Rhodopes, and it is the best place to observe the numerous small villages scattered upon the unreachable peaks.
