Batoshevski Monastery - amidst the Balkans' maze
click
The Batoshevo Monastery of the Assumption is located high among the beautiful northern slopes of Stara Planina. An ancient inscription, now preserved at the National Historical Museum, was found in the monastery, giving evidence that it was founded in the 12th century. The monastery was deserted during the Turkish oppression, then it was burned in 1876, and restored after the Liberation. All its buildings, considered extraordinary architectural monuments, are now in good condition. There are priceless frescoes and ancient icons in the three-dome church in the middle of the yard. There was a monastery school there during the Bulgarian Revival, where Matei Preobrazenski and Bacho Kiro studied.
